Meet Our Ice Skating Instructors

Jalyn Owens 

Jalyn is currently the skating school director. She has over 20 years of figure skating experience and has competed both regionally and nationally with Theatre on Ice. With a passion for sharing her lifelong love of the sport, Jalyn has over 7 years of coaching experience and is excited to work with skaters of all ages and skill levels. Her specialties include mastering the fundamentals of figure skating, spins, edges, power stroking, and skating skills for hockey players. Outside of the rink, Jalyn is a speech language pathology student with an interest in working with children.

Kirstyn Beattie

Kirstyn is an experienced figure skating coach with over 15 years of dedicated expertise in the sport. Her comprehensive knowledge extends to both singles and pair skating, where she has honed skills in spins, jumps, choreography, edges, and off-ice training. Kirstyn brings a stellar pedigree to her coaching, having achieved USFS Gold Medalist status in Moves in the Field. What's more, she has had the privilege of training with Olympic coaches, enriching her coaching prowess. Her competitive spirit has led to regional success, with a notable placement in 2017. Beyond her impressive accomplishments, Kirstyn is known for her versatility in teaching, catering to students of all ages and skill levels. What truly sets her apart is her unwavering commitment to creating an encouraging and healthy training environment, ensuring that each student enjoys the figure skating journey to the fullest.

Jenny Brenson

Coaching since 1995, Jenny has worked with students of all ages and levels.  She is the co-founder of Los Angeles Ice Theater, a nationally and internationally ranked team and choreographed for them for over 20 years.  Jenny was nominated for the Professional Skaters Association President’s Award of Excellence in 2019.  She is recognized by US Figure Skating as a double gold medalist in the disciplines of freestyle and moves in the field. She also has her pre-gold in ice dancing. Jenny is a certified through PSA as a category A instructor and she has had over 8 years of professional show experience. Her goal is to bring the passion and joy of figure skating to all of her students.

 

Erica Chen

Erica was a competitive skater in China for 11 years. She is a 3x novice and junior National Champion at the ages of 14 and 15.  Erica has over 10 years of coaching experience and has competitive level skaters who have placed 1st and 2nd many times in ISI and ISU. She teaches freestyle, spins, edges, jumps, and choreography.

 

Mary Couense

Mary is a Triple Gold Medalist, British Champion, and World team member. She is a US National and International team coach and has worked with World and Olympic competitors including champions of England, Germany, Italy, Japan, South Africa, and USA. Mary has expertise in all disciplines of figure skating and is a USFS Judge and Junior World Team leader. She teaches “sound basics” of figure skating to help students become champions both on and off ice.

 

Kimberly Dodson

Kimberly is a double gold medalist with 10 years of professional show experience and over 25 years of skating experience including ice dance and pairs. She loves to teach all levels of skating, from beginner to advanced, and specializes in performance, spins, choreography, adagio pairs, and flexibility. Kimberly recently received her degree in Ayurvedic Wellness and is a certified yoga instructor, allowing her to offer support both on and off the ice.

Nadège Dollonne-Rohrbacher 

Nadège has been involved in the sport of figure skating for over 20 years, with 6 years of teaching experience. Previously, she competed with McGill University’s figure skating team in synchronized skating and ice dancing throughout Eastern Canada. She enjoys working with beginner through intermediate level skaters on fundamental basic skills, and loves working with children as equally as she enjoys coaching adult students. Nadège has a masters degree in human genetics, and while not on the ice she works as a genetic counselor, helping families understand and manage their hereditary health risks. 

Kristy Evans

Kristy was a US National Competitor, a National Collegiate Champion, 2x Silver medalist and Southwest Pacific Regional Champion. She is also a USFS Gold Medalist in freestyle. Kristy had 23 years of competitive skating experience and 20 years of coaching experience. She specializes in advanced jump technique, spins, choreography, and overall freestyle presentation.

 

 

Mary Jean Joyce

Mary has over 20+ years of experience as a figure skater and over 12+ years of experience teaching Singles (formerly Freestyle), Skating Skills (formerly Moves in the Field), Hockey Skating, Basic Ice Dance Elements, Power Skating, Choreography, Collegiate Skaters, Adult Skaters, Special Needs Skaters, Recreational Skaters, and Beginners. Focuses on the fundamentals of ice-skating skills to help build a strong foundation in skating with strong attention to detail for all ages and abilities. Outside of ice skating, Mary has a Master’s Degree in Applied Information Technology and works as a QA Engineer.

Lynsy Kellner

Lynsy has over 30 years of skating experience and has medaled at several regional and national competitions. Lynsy brings her passion for figure skating and her love of teaching together in a skater-centered style of coaching, focusing not only on the physical skills required to become a competent figure skater but the mental as well, focusing on tailoring her instruction to suit the unique strengths and goals of each skater in an effort to empower every skater to realize their full potential and a life long love of the sport.

Lynsy is a certified Learn to Skate instructor, a certified coach through the PSA and she is certified through USFS Coach Core. Lynsy enjoys coaching Free Style, Moves In The Field (Skating Skills), Dance and all Basic Skills levels to all ages, from children to adults.

 

 

Billy Kheir

Billy, a Triple Gold Medalist, has coached USFS & ISI freestyle skaters of all levels for over 20 years. He specializes in Singles, Pairs, and Adult Figure Skating. He concentrates on jump technique, spin technique, off-conditioning, and pole harness training. Coach Billy thrives on creating a healthy team training environment for his skaters who compete at the Local, National, and International Levels. 

 

Stacy Leung

Stacy was a national and international competitor. Chinese National ice dance Silver medalist. Junior National champion. She was a Chinese National team member and Chinese master rated athlete. US Figure Skating Gold Medalist.

With 25 years coaching experience, Stacy teaches skaters and seminar from basic skills to international competitors. 

She specializes in Freestyle, Ice Dance, Edges, Choreography Artistry and Off ice training.

Educational Background: Physical Education from Beijing Sports University

 

Doug Murray

Doug has 46+ years of skating experience and has been coaching for over 32 years. He is a 5 time U.S. National competitor, Pacific Coast Sectional Silver medalist, and USFS Triple Gold medalist. Doug started coaching at the world renowned Ice Castle International Training Center in Lake Arrowhead in 1990, and for 24 years he coached all levels of skating, including national, world and Olympic skaters. For 15 years, Doug taught on the elite coaching team of Olympic Coach Rafael Arutyunyan. Doug enjoys working with skaters of all levels from recreational to elite competitors. Specialties include: advanced jump technique & spins, jump harness, moves in the field, footwork, and Ice dancing.

 

Kaitlyn Nguyen

Kaitlyn "Kat" has over 18 years of competitive figure skating experience and 3 years of coaching experience. She has trained at the Olympic Training Center and is the 2017 Junior National Champion and a former Team USA competitor. At just 14 years old, Kaitlyn made her debut as a Senior National and International competitor at the US Figure Skating Championships in 2018.

Versatile in her teaching, Kaitlyn's area of expertise ranges from the basics to advanced jump technique and freestyle.

Ashley Shyu

Ashley has 28 years of figure skating experience and 16 years of teaching experience. She has medaled at Synchronized Skating Nationals (’99), Theatre on Ice Nationals (’14), Adult Nationals (’12,’13) and National Showcase (’12). For 10 years, Ashley was a USFS announcer at regionals, sectionals, and national showcase (’12,’14) competitions. She is the head coach at Ballyhoo Ice Theatre.  Ashley teaches all ages and levels and enjoys fostering the love of skating. 

 

Alexander Trieu

Alexander currently has 8+ years of skating experience and holds the Southwest Pacific Regional Gold Medalist title. Since he began teaching at Ontario Center Ice in 2019, Alexander has taught students ranging from 3 years old to 30 years old. Before coaching figure skating, he tutored high school students and is currently studying and majoring in Economics and Finance. Alexander teaches skating classes specializing in jump technique, spins, power stroking, and edge control. His goal is to develop skating skills amongst his students, share his knowledge of figure skating, and mentor students.

Becca Valadez

Becca has 10 years of coaching experience and is a USFS Double Gold Medalist in Moves in the field and free skate.  She is a certified “Learn to Skate” Instructor and teaches all areas of skating. Becca specializes in choreography, spins, and cleaning up jump technique
